Only at the end of the day, after hours of work between cross-analysis of data and confirmations from relatives, the local police managed to identify the two motorcyclists who died yesterday morning in a violent accident that occurred on the stretch of the ring road known as theOlympic. A stretch of road where accidents happen with disarming frequency. And the latest tragedy confirms it.

THE VICTIMS

This time, two men lost their lives, both on their motorcycles. The youngest was 46 years old and was called Luca De Luca. He was born in Rome, had a small daughter, and ran a bar and snack bar in the Prati neighborhood. The other, however, was a 52-year-old Vietnamese man who had arrived in the capital with his family some time ago. His name was Tuan Ngoc Nguyen Tri. Both were traveling without documents, which is why it took the police several hours to identify them.

THE RECONSTRUCTION

It’s 11:30 on Sunday morning, the two motorcyclists are riding in the same direction: both are driving towards the Olympic Stadium. De Luca is riding his Triumph, while Tuan Ngoc is riding a Buell BL1. The two motorcycles are traveling almost parallel when, at a certain point, they come into contact with each other. They collide and the effect is devastating: the vehicles fall violently to the ground, while the two drivers are literally thrown into the air. One falls onto the asphalt, while the other ends up between the sheets of the guardrail that divides the two lanes. The impact is fatal for both: they both die instantly. In fact, the attempts of the 118 emergency responders were in vain and they could do nothing but confirm the death of both motorcyclists.

THE WITNESSES

A scene that takes place before the astonished eyes of the many people who at that time were traveling that stretch of road in both directions. Among them a motorist who was right behind the two motorcyclists. It was him, once the various patrols of the II Parioli Group of the local police arrived on the scene, who told the police what he had seen. However, a partial story because it all happened in a few seconds. A few moments that cost the lives of two men.

THE INVESTIGATIONS

The exact dynamics, therefore, are still unclear. The traffic police will have to find out exactly how the contact between the two motorcycles occurred. They will have to understand whether it was De Luca who went against Tuan Ngoc, or vice versa. The reason for the collision also needs to be clarified. Perhaps one of the two was taken ill, perhaps a distraction or an obstacle on the asphalt or even an attempted overtaking that ended badly. It is also not excluded that the high speed may have played a role, even if it is still unclear how fast the two motorcycles were going. At the moment, therefore, there is no certainty and all hypotheses are considered valid.

THE HYPOTHESIS

Hypotheses that can be confirmed or not only at the conclusion of the investigations which, according to those who are dealing with them, are not at all simple. In fact, the dynamics are complex and the stretch of road involved in the surveys is very large because both the motorbikes and the bodies of the two drivers were found at a distance of many meters from each other, in the stretch of ring road near the exit in via Prati Fiscali-Salaria.

The local police investigations lasted several hours and the road was reopened to traffic only shortly before 5pm. The queues and slowdowns that occurred during the day were inevitable.

PICTURES

The images from the ring road’s video surveillance cameras which have already been acquired by the officers will clarify the picture. The two motorbikes, as per practice, were seized and then analyzed. The bodies of the two motorcyclists, however, were transferred to the Gemelli Polyclinic while waiting to understand whether an autopsy will be carried out or not. In the meantime, the traffic police have sent all the documentation to the Prosecutor’s Office who will now decide how to proceed.

THE REACTIONS

What is certain, as those who travel that road every day say, is that Sunday morning’s fatality is not the first accident to occur on that stretch near the junction. “You can’t see the junction very well, also because of the heavy traffic. Above all, you can’t easily notice the traffic island. If you don’t see it right away, you risk crashing into it,” says a fifty-year-old resident of Parioli who travels that road every morning. And this is confirmed by the many users who comment on the incident on the various neighborhood Facebook groups. “They should put up even more obvious signs and maybe even install speed bumps to make people go slower,” writes one user. “The problem is that people speed too much there. Every day something happens, often bad things,” adds another. In just a few minutes, in fact, the news of the tragedy of the two motorcyclists went viral on the web and social media, amid anger and concern among people over the growing number of accidents that occur every day in Rome and the province. Often fatal accidents, with lives and families destroyed.
