Sassari prison: prisoner sets himself on fire in the infirmary. Prison police who intervened to save him were also burned

An inmate set himself on fire in the infirmary of the Bancali prison on the evening of June 21. In the past, the man had allegedly already been involved in critical events during his detention.
This was announced by the autonomous union of penitentiary police, Sappe, which has announced a protest demonstration on Friday 28 June outside the offices of the Regional Penitentiary Authority of Cagliari.

According to the Sappe report, a man of Moroccan origin doused his body with alcohol and set himself on fire at the end of the evening.
In addition to him, some prison police officers who intervened to save the man, now hospitalized in the burns center of the Sassari hospital, were also burned and bruised.

Antonio Cannas, delegate for Sardinia of the Autonomous Union of Penitentiary Police.
“We are talking about a very complicated individual, who two weeks ago was responsible for attacking staff by throwing a fire extinguisher at them, reported several times for aggressive behavior and self-harm.
Now we hope that the burned and bruised colleagues recover as soon as possible. Our solidarity goes out to them”.

The trade unionist announces that on Friday 28 June Sappe, together with other Bancali trade union organisations, will organize a sit-in protest in Cagliari, in front of the Prap headquarters.
“We will once again urge the intervention of the Ministry of Justice and the national bodies of the Penitentiary Administration on the critical issues of Bancali, known to all in terms of work, union relations and internal security.
What is needed here are concrete measures capable of restoring legality and safety for prison officers, left in disarray and adrift.”

Full support for the protest of the Penitentiary Police of Bancali, in Sassari, comes from Donato Capece, general secretary of Sappe:
“As the General Secretariat of Sappe we will take action at the Department of Penitentiary Administration to ensure that the just protests of colleagues from Sassari and the entire Region receive attention and consequent measures.

We hope that the heads of the DAP and the Regional Penitentiary Authority of Cagliari will intervene promptly and urgently adopt the necessary measures to safeguard the safety of the prison.
Every day we hear news of attacks on women and men of the Corps serving in the country’s penitentiary institutions, increasingly bruised, injured, humiliated and victims of violence by a part of the prison population that has no qualms about attacking those who represent the State in prison”.
