PORTOGRUARO – A major fire involved a semi-trailer on the highway A4 today, Wednesday 26 June, at 11.45am. The episode occurred between the Portogruaro junction and San Stino di Livenza at km 451, where the firefighters promptly intervened. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

The driver, traveling towards Venice, noticed the flames emanating from his semi-trailer through the mirrors. In a quick safety maneuver, he stopped the vehicle and disconnected the tractor unit, while the fire spread rapidly.

Massive and coordinated intervention

The emergency response teams of Portogruaro, Mestre and Pordenone mobilized effectively. With a fire engine, three tankers, the foam truck and the core NBCR (Nuclear Biological Chemical Radiological), a total of 15 operators worked tirelessly to put out the flames. The vehicle’s cargo, consisting of materials to be recycled such as lithium batteries, solar panels and neon lamps, was completely destroyed by the fire.

The extinguishing operations were followed by intense clean-up activities, still underway at the time of writing this article. In addition to the firefighters, the traffic police and the highway personnel of the Northern Adriatic were present on site to manage the situation and regulate traffic.

Investigations are underway to clarify the precise causes of the fire and to evaluate any future preventive measures. In the meantime, motorists are advised to pay maximum attention and follow the instructions of local authorities when traveling through the area.

The motorway section of the A4 between the Portogruaro hub and San Stino di Livenza in the direction of Venice has been reopened – update at 1.55 pm. Thanks to the intervention of the firefighters, the fire in the heavy vehicle which occurred at kilometer 451 was promptly put out. There were no consequences for the driver who, having noticed the smoke, managed to get out of the vehicle.

The operations, however, are not finished. The heavy vehicle was carrying car batteries and therefore, in agreement with the firefighters and following a specific procedure, steps are currently being taken to immerse the same batteries in water and transfer them to a container which has arrived at the scene of the accident. fire. Only at the end of this activity will it be possible to remove the vehicle with the intervention of a crane.

During the removal, the stretch between Portogruaro and San Stino towards Venice will be closed again for a few minutes and then completely reopened at the end of the intervention. During all these operations and until their conclusion, the entrance to the Portogruaro junction towards Venice will always remain closed.
