Carovigno: Meeting “Creating a community friendly to people with dementia”

The “San Francesco da Paola” Day Center in Ostuni continues its activity of promoting services to create “A community friendly to people with dementia”. Tuesday 25 June, at 7.30 pm, in the Mother Church of Carovigno, will meet associations, citizens and family doctors for a debate on existing healthcare services in the area. The meeting is promoted by the OSA Cooperative, manager of the Ostuni Day Centre, by the AVULSS of Carovigno, by the AIFO of Ostuni, with the patronage of the cities of Ostuni and Carovigno. Speakers: Don Franco Pellegrino, Vicar General of the Diocese of Brindisi-Ostuni; Massimo Lanzilotti, Mayor of Carovigno; Franco Orlandino, AVULSS Carovigno Association; Leonardo Buongiorno, AIFO Ostuni Association; Francesco Colizzi, psychiatrist and consultant at the Ostuni Day Centre; Nicola Ciracì, administrative director of OSA; Luigi Orlandini, councilor for social services of the Municipality of Carovigno; Sabrina Franco, councilor for culture of the Municipality of Carovigno; Antonella Turco, councilor for social services of the Municipality of Ostuni; Antonio Frascaro, head of the REMS of Carovigno and expert in Alzheimer’s dementia, and the operators of the Day Centre.

The network of existing care services for the large segment of the population with dementia is not able to adequately respond to the demand for assistance and this is mainly taken up by family members and caregivers (especially carers at home). The evolution of dementia, or neurocognitive disorder, occurs along a continuum of severity, but apathy, agitation, anxiety, depression and even psychotic disorders can already appear in the mild-moderate phase.

In the transition from the mild to the severe form, when the needs for assistance amplify, psychosocial and educational interventions are possible carried out in Day Centers (currently only three in the province), semi-residential structures capable of alleviating the physical, emotional and social burden of families and caregivers, slow down the progression of the disorder and preserve the person’s dignity.

At the “San Francesco di Paola” Day Center, managed by OSA, open from 9:00 to 17:00 also in modular form, it is accessed following the multidisciplinary evaluation of a health district commission (UVM). Admission is gradual and includes an Individualized Assistance Plan (IAP) which finalizes the activities based on recognized needs. The first line is represented by psychosocial interventions based on evidence of effectiveness; the second line includes the commitment to prevent and treat the geriatric syndromes that guests often suffer from and the monitoring of any psychopharmacological treatments. The spaces and services, foreseen by regional legislation to accommodate up to 30 people, constitute in themselves a therapeutic environment, made increasingly adequate thanks to competent and passionate operators (health manager, specialist doctor, physiotherapist, professional nurse, OSS, professional educator , psychologist and social worker).
