ROCCA IMPERIALE (CS) – Two days of fire in Rocca Imperiale, in the province of Cosenza, due to the huge fire that hit the center of the Ionian coast of Cosenza over the weekend. The scorching temperatures and the wind have worsened the situation, throwing the community into nightmare and worry. The mayor Giuseppe RanùHowever, he reports from his Facebook page “delays in interventions and rescue forces me to make every appropriate assessment. We are preparing a resolution for the state of disaster request which we will promptly send to the Region for appropriate assessments. The damage is substantial.”

“A day of fire. A night of fire. More operational units engaged.” Mayor Giuseppe Ranù is saddened and still in shock by what happened in the Upper Ionian village of Cosentino. “I thank the volunteers, the firefighters and the police forces again. I had never seen something like it. The fire entered the village, its pine forest, generating panic and fear. People abandoning their homes. Men and women trying their best to put out the flames. Volunteers who risked their lives. Scenes from a movie. This is not the time for controversy and in fact I thank everyone but it is impossible that two emergency services alerted at 3pm arrive at 7pm when everything already seems lost? When we are literally surrounded by flames? Take action immediately! More men, more vehicles and timely relief.
And again, the mayor insists: “I have heard from President Occhiuto whom I thank for his availability but think about providing the Municipalities with means for emergency interventions. With this organization you’re not going anywhere. A 4 hour delay is too much. I understand that the operational units were busy on other fires but this is how you DIE! Municipalities must be equipped with means, financial resources are needed. The service must be organized. This way of intervening – he concludes – puts families and rescue workers in danger. Set up a table with the Mayors and make them protagonists in the defense of the territory, we are ready to take charge.
