The entrance to Maruggio
The environmentalist association «Azzurro Ionio» has put a reward of 5 thousand euros on anyone who will offer certain indications to identify the authors of the fires which have been affecting the same territory of the municipality of Maruggio since yesterday.
President Francesco Di Lauro spread the news, convinced that the fires were not a coincidence. “We counted five outbreaks in as many points of the territory, a sign that someone set fire”, declares Di Lauro who hopes to discover the alleged arsonists. The access road to Maruggio coming from Manduria (see photo) is closed to traffic by emergency vehicles.
Meanwhile, for a few hours a Civil Protection helicopter has been shuttling between the sea of Campomarino, where it loads the bag which it unloads onto the flames which are dangerously close to the town of Maruggio. The “Cureggia” forest in the Cazzizzi district would have already been devoured by fire.
