“From the knowledge of deep space to the protection of our planet”, was the title of a meeting held in recent days with Dr. Annamaria Nassisi at the Church of Purgatory in Terracina. The meeting was aimed at raising funds for the restoration of the canvas of the main altar of the same Church which is located in the historic center of the city. Dr. Annamaria Nassisi presented a virtual journey from deep space to the monitoring of our planet Earth to understand, with some simple examples, why Space is important to expand our knowledge. In the description she also focused on some women who have been significant for scientific dissemination and in supporting the choice of STEM disciplines.
Our starry sky – Nassisi said – in addition to intriguing us, has guided great thinkers and scientists. In order to scrutinize the sky, and the entire underlying Cosmos, at the beginning we only had a telescope available that allowed us to study our solar system. Last year the European Space Agency (ESA) launched the Euclid satellite to search for dark matter and in the next six years this satellite will observe the shapes, distances and movements of billions of galaxies up to 10 billion light years away, creating the largest 3D cosmic map.
Many projects are underway both to study alternative solutions to support energy sustainability as well as to support renewable energy sources. greenwind turbines and solar panels, which in new studies, Solaris, for the construction of a system of solar panels deployed in space with the aim of transmitting all the acquired energy to Earth.
Unfortunately, pollution has also been produced in space where there is a lot of debris, called debrisdue to parts of the launchers or to the satellites themselves and, as on Earth, technologies are now being developed to clean up space and make space services such as Earth Observation, Telecommunications and Navigation sustainable.
