The owner of the “Al Porticello” restaurant in the Stazzone area of Sciacca clarified that the explosion yesterday afternoon, 18 June, which occurred during operations to put out the fire, involved a keg of beer, and not a gas cylinder for as originally learned. The fire brigade is still investigating the causes of the fire, but at the moment it seems to be an accidental episode. Part of the roofing of the completely destroyed pizzeria restaurant was made of asbestos. The appropriate checks are underway, considering the fact that asbestos is a particularly delicate and dangerous material. The technicians of the Arpa (Regional Agency for environmental protection) have arrived in Sciacca to arrange the necessary interventions for the reclamation of the area. Mayor Fabio Termine is preparing to commission a specialized company to remove all asbestos residues. Furthermore, civil protection measures to maintain the evacuation of surrounding residences are currently being evaluated.
