The Liguria Region confirms its commitment to supporting athletes with disabilities, approving for 2024 a contribution of 40 thousand euros for the purchase of tools that prevent, compensate, alleviate or eliminate an impairment, a disability or a handicap. This important support will allow athletes registered with Paralympic clubs to carry out regular sporting activities.

“Liguria was the first region in Italy to allocate a contribution of this type,” underlines the councilor for social policies Giacomo Giampedrone. “We believe that this is a fundamental and indispensable support, considering that sporting activity is an extraordinary tool for social inclusion, as well as health promotion and prevention. Furthermore, it is a source of great pride for us to support our disabled athletes who, more and more often, assert themselves in national and international competitions, raising the name of Liguria high: these kids are a source of inspiration and constitute a spur for many other young people who find themselves facing disability, including as a result of trauma or a road accident.”

“The numbers certify the development of the Ligurian paralympic movement,” comments the Sports councilor Simona Ferro. “It is therefore absolutely necessary to give continuity to this measure which represents tangible help for many local athletes. Liguria will be the European Region of Sport in 2025 and, consistently with the guidelines we presented in our candidacy, we really want all our Paralympic athletes to be put in the best conditions to train and express their full potential, also because these champions represent a great example for all of us and they remind us every day that through sport it is possible to face and overcome any obstacle.”

From 2018 to 2023, as part of the project, the Liguria Region contributed to the purchase of sports aids for 80 athletes with disabilities, members of paralympic clubs recognized by the CIP. The number of athletes with disabilities registered in Paralympic clubs is growing, going from around 150 in 2022 to around 230 in 2023. With this contribution, the range of eligible people extends to as many disabled athletes as possible, including those who play in championships national and regional members belonging to associations recognized by CIP.

The collection of applications will be handled by the regional council for the protection of the rights of disabled people, which will manage the contribution of 40 thousand euros. The evaluation of the applications will be entrusted to a dedicated Commission, operating free of charge. Each application must include a quote for the sports aid requested (or parts thereof) and the subsequent invoice for reporting purposes. The contribution may be requested for the purchase of specific sports aids or parts of them and cannot exceed 4 thousand euros for each athlete (VAT remains the responsibility of the athlete). Applications must be received by the Regional Council for the protection of the rights of disabled people no later than 30 days from the date of publication (14 July 2024) of the resolution in the “Notices and Announcements” section of the website www.regione.liguria.it.
