Our interview with Enrico Giovannini, former Minister of Infrastructure and Labour, co-founder and scientific director of the Italian Alliance for Sustainable Development (ASviS), on the key issues of the energy transition in light of the European vote in June and the new balances political and economic ones that will be formed on the continent.

Professor Giovannini, today I would like to comment with you on the result of the elections for the European Parliament, a result on which the achievement of the ambitious energy transition targets and the implementation, over the next five years, of further actions for sustainable development by the Union.

What do you think should be the priorities of the new governance?

Someone asks me whether the Green Deal will survive or not. I believe that the theme of the next 5 years will instead be linked to the fact that it will be necessary to decide whether Europe is a subject that makes its policies above all through regulation, that is, with Directives, Regulations and so on, or whether it will be repeated the experience of Next Generation Eu, and therefore institutionalized a fiscal capacity to compete with the United States, China, which are putting in huge financial resources, copying in some way (especially the United States) from the European Green Deal approach. Because, although we can change the legislation, perhaps loosening it with some adjustments compared to everything that has been decided so far, the real issue is who finances the energy and ecological transition.
