Treacherous mountain after a rainy and snowy spring: three rescue operations

FVG – With the improvement of weather conditions, hikers have returned to populate the mountain paths of Friuli.

However, be careful not to underestimate the pitfalls!

Also due to a particular spring which saw very heavy rainfall, late snow and below normal temperatures.

Poor visibility due to fog created further problems.

Three interventions by the regional Alpine Rescue on Sunday 16 June, involving the teams in the mountains of Forni di Sopra, Andreis and Forni Avoltri.

Injured woman between Malga Tartoi and Malga Varmost

Between around 12pm and 1pm the Forni di Sopra Alpine Rescue station was alerted by Sores together with the Guardia di Finanza and the regional air ambulance for a person who had been injured along the path that connects Malga Tartoi to Malga Varmost.

The woman was at an altitude of 1760 meters and was unable to continue due to a suspected ankle fracture. She was reached by a technician from the Forni di Sopra station and shortly afterwards by the regional air ambulance.

The technical-health team stabilized her, together with the rescuer who arrived on foot, and then took her on board using the winch. The helicopter then headed to the Tolmezzo hospital.

Stuck hiker rescued

Between 4pm and 6pm the Maniago Alpine Rescue station was activated by Sores together with the regional air ambulance to rescue a woman from the Pordenone area born in 1980 who was stuck on some rock jumps on impervious terrain. The woman had climbed Monte Castello and on the way back down she had taken a black trail, due to her poor visibility.

A team of rescuers was taken by helicopter to try to spot her, but without success, precisely because of the clouds. Later, with another rotation, the person was spotted and then reached by rescuers to be recovered with the winch, unharmed.

The rescue team that landed at high altitude descended on foot as the helicopter moved to the scene of another accident.

Group blocked by a snowfield

Between approximately 5pm and 7pm the Forni Avoltri Alpine Rescue station intervened with four rescuers together with two other men from the Guardia di Finanza and the regional air rescue, all activated by Sores after a call received by Nue112, to rescue four hikers, three women and a man, aged between 19 and 57, all from Friuli, were stuck at the end of the descent along the Spinotti path, right at the terminal ladder, at an altitude of approximately 1800 metres.

The group did not feel like crossing the rather steep snowfield below the ladder, fearing slipping on the rocks and scree below.

The rescuers were taken to altitude by the regional air rescue and disembarked along the path that leads to the Lambertenghi Romanin Refuge, due to the presence of fog which prevented visibility.

On foot they reached the canal where the Spinotti path begins and equipped a fixed rope on the ladder to allow the four hikers to descend with a handrail, then accompanying them on the descent along the path.

The four were then loaded aboard the off-road vehicle to travel the last stretch to the Tolazzi refuge.

There is still snow at high altitude: be careful!

The Alpine Rescue recommends prudence and attention when choosing itineraries at altitude: above 1800 meters there is still snow, especially in the shaded areas with northern exposure, due to the late snowy spring and slightly spring-like temperatures
