Arrested on 11 February 2023 in Budapest on charges of attacking three neo-Nazis who had taken part in the ‘Day of Honour’, Ilaria Salis – who turns 40 tomorrow – with her election to the European Parliament secured her ‘immunity. The Hungarian judge suspended the trial (she risks 24 years in prison) and yesterday she left Budapest – she had been under house arrest since last May 23 – and, after a nine-hour journey, she returned to her parents’ home in Monza, from which she was away for over 15 months.

Newly elected to the European Parliament on the lists of the Greens and Left Alliance, she returned to Italy yesterday around 7.30 pm, following her release from prison in recent days in Budapest and the recognition of her parliamentary immunity by the judge. The 39-year-old arrived by car accompanied by her father Roberto and her mother.
