The fires forests destroy biodiversity, put the lives of people and animals at risk and today constitute the most serious threat for the Otranto Park Leuca and Bosco delle Vallonee di Tricase: drones with facial recognition ed Artificial intelligence they will hunt down arsonists and dirty people who leave rubbish. This is the drastic decision taken at the last assembly of the Otranto Leuca Park. The agronomist Michele Tenore is president of the new executive and includes the agronomist Gianfranco Cataldi and the civil environmental engineer Cristina Rizzo.
The assembly
Presiding over the Mayors’ Assembly is Osvaldo Stendardo, Mayor of Alessano, with deputy Alberto Capraro (deputy Mayor of Castro). All the mayors of the municipalities from Otranto to Leuca and the Province of Lecce participated in the assembly. Priority, therefore, is fire protection.
«There are different priorities in this action to combat fires which, we repeat, are in many cases malicious – explains the president Michele Tenore – On the one hand it was decided to carry out complete maintenance and cleaning of the ancient paths, this allows us to have both the fire routes and to get the vehicles into areas that are, very often, inaccessible. The other measure is an agreement with the Civil Protection acting as guardian and first responder. It often happens that in a park 60 kilometers long – while the Canadians are busy there in Otranto, it is the Civil Protection volunteers who intervene promptly 20 or thirty kilometers away, avoiding the risk of the second fire causing houses and tourist activities to burn down” .
But now things are changing with the hunt for those responsible for the fires who are almost always also those who abandon waste in naturalistic areas. «We will finally activate video surveillance and the use of drones with facial recognition, vehicle types and car license plates». In short, new technologies will help the Park fight fires and safeguard human lives this summer. Arsonists, thanks to new technologies and Artificial Intelligence, will be able to be identified by drones flying even several kilometers away, they will be able to be monitored and chased, triangulating the information with the police for their arrest and with the Protection civil to nip every little outbreak in the bud.
The drones
The new generation drones will allow the subjects, their means of locomotion and also the ways in which they acted to be identified with certainty. For this reason, new software that uses the help of artificial intelligence has a much greater detection capacity than a simple video surveillance system. Now we await not only protection but, finally, the capture of the arsonists who put human lives and economic activities at risk, as well as destroying nature. Precisely for this reason there is the commitment of the forestry carabinieri who, spread throughout the territory, will be employed in the prevention and repression of the phenomenon, through an oriented gravitation of patrol services, supervision of the implementation of prevention measures and on compliance with prohibitions, such as that of lighting fires and burning plant residues, as well as surveillance using technological and IT means. Surveillance activity will be intensified in the presence of weather and climate conditions favorable to the spread of forest fires and in areas of greater naturalistic and environmental value. In short, arsonists are warned and citizens will be able to give concrete help by reporting every small outbreak in the bud.
