Kiev (Ukraine) – Ukraine’s agricultural production potential did not suffer significant damage from the Russian invasion, which however brought notable changes in trade with other countries. Ismea, which has been monitoring the situation since the beginning of the conflict, published in May the latest report. Before the war, agri-food products accounted for around 43% of Kiev’s exports, but in 2023 they rose to almost 61%; the value is 20.3 billion euros (still a -9.6% on 2022).

The incidence of corn exports to the EU went from 30% (2001) to 58% (2023); the quantities exported are equal to 27 million tonnes of products per year (average of the last five years), for a value of 4.8 billion euros. Crude sunflower oil (five million tons per year, for four billion euros) also saw the EU share go from 30% to 50%. The volumes of Common wheat (17 million tons per year, for 3.2 billion euros) have seen there European share to grow dramatically from 2% to 51%; non-EU countries (especially Egypt, Indonesia, Bangladesh and Turkey), which previously represented 98% of wheat exports, have fallen to 49%. Overall, in 2023 the EU represents 56.8% of Ukraine’s agri-food exports.

Italy went from purchasing 121 thousand tonnes of wheat (2021) to 589 thousand tonnes (2023), while corn stood at 2.477 million tonnes (10% of the quantities exported by Kiev). Ukraine is therefore positioned as 13th national supplier of agri-food products, with 1.1 billion euros and 1.8% share; in particular, it covers 30% of Italian supplies of corn, 46% of those of crude sunflower oil, and 10% of those of soft wheat.
