Last night’s storm caused extensive damage

Until late yesterday evening, the Pegaso and Gev Capitanata civil protection teams were busy responding to numerous requests for intervention after the violent storm that hit Vieste and the surrounding areas, causing significant damage but, fortunately, no one was injured. The storm, characterized by intense rain, strong winds and hail the size of tennis balls, began around 6.30pm and paralyzed the center of Vieste, with damage also reported in the neighboring municipalities of Peschici and Vico del Gargano.

The wind knocked down numerous treesone of which, in Piazza Santa Maria delle Grazie, fell on four parked cars, causing serious damage. The Pegaso team intervened to clear the vehicles and the road. Other fallen trees blocked traffic in areas such as “Petto”, “Santo Stefano”, “Costella”, “Mandrione” and “Carabella” until Pegaso and Gev Capitanata removed trunks and branches. Numerous floods were reported in different parts of the city, particularly in low-lying areas such as “Pantanello” and “C1Sud”. The Pegaso water pumps were used in a hospitality facility in “Posta Pastorella” to remove the water accumulated in some rooms.

The strong wind damaged many restaurant and venue structures in the citycausing tents, umbrellas, chairs and tables to fly away. Crops, in particular olive groves, orchards and vegetables, also suffered damage. The storm forced the organizers to cancel the events of the feast of St. Anthony of Padua, including the musical show “Hit Parade Tour” with Demo Morselli and Marcello Cirillo, and the fireworks, which were completely destroyed. The procession of the Saint, scheduled for the evening, has been postponed to Sunday, June 16, at 8.30pm.

As already mentioned, damage was also reported in the municipalities of Peschici and Vico del Gargano.
