Nobody like Nadia Battocletti: the Trentino middle-distance runner, already victorious in the 5 thousand meters at the European Championships in Rome, was repeated today in the 10 thousand. Gold medal and record Italian, all seasoned with a spectacular solo escape accompanied by the roar of the Olimpico.
Nadia, impressive pace: scary final sprint
They were four the Italians in the final: in addition to Battocletti, also Federica Del Buono, Valentina Gemetto and Elisa Palmero. Nadia’s main opponents were the Scottish Eilish McColgan together with the Slovenian Klara Lukanthe British tream is missing, with the seasonal leader Megan Keith, it was fearsome. Battocletti and Del Buono immediately keep up leading groupwhile the two companions soon began to suffer delays important. Before the halfway point of the race, it becomes clear that it will be a six-way affair: Del Buono and Battocletti ensure that the pace is dictated by their rivals, but they manage astutely the forces for the grand finale. After exceeding 5 thousand meters, only 5 remained to fight for a medal. The two blues lead the group, while the Dutch Van Es struggling to keep up with them. On the last lap, Battocletti makes everyone understand why she is a stellar champion: the native of Clès increases the engine speed, detaching all the others and flying to the finish line alone. For her the (monstrous) time of 30:35.30, with Van Es more than five seconds behind (30:40.50). Bronze for Keith (30:46.01), Del Buono stops in fourth place.
