A phenomenal Nadia Battocletti gave an encore and after the victory in the 5000 meters she also won gold in the 10000 meters at the European Athletics Championships in Rome 2024. In the leading group from the start, the Italian champion broke away in the last two laps, finishing solo with a time of 30’52″32, a new national record taken from the late Maura Viceconte. Excellent fourth place for the other Italian Federica Del Buono with 31’25″41. No Italian woman had ever won two titles in the same European Championship.
Nadia Battocletti then received compliments from the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, present at the Olympic stadium in the grandstand: “I had fun and I’m very happy. I think I changed my mentality after the world championships in Budapest last year, since then I have grown more and more, race after race, with even greater commitment because without a maximum sacrifice you can’t get anywhere. I also dedicate this victory to all my family and all those close to me. It was nice to meet the President of the Republic, he is a very nice person, he wanted to greet me and it was exciting”.
