CALOGERO MININNI, ALTAMURA – Considered the gateway to Calabria, Rocca Imperiale, in the province of Cosenza, is one of the most picturesque medieval villages in the entire region. It is no coincidence that in 2018 it became part of the most beautiful villages in Italy. The natural beauty of the landscape and the sea, combined with the architectural and historical heritage, the climate, the geographical position between the Pollino National Park, the Sibari Plain and the Metapontino area, constitute a fascinating tourist attraction among the itineraries of Calabria . The foundation is attributed to Frederick II of Swabia, from whom the town of Rocca Imperiale takes its name, who apparently had the castle built like many others to strengthen his power over the territory but also as a stopover in his repeated journeys to and from Sicily. Walking through its streets it will be impossible not to smell a very intense and persistent scent: that of the famous “flowering lemons” which are almost completely seedless and so particular that they have obtained the PGI designation.
