Azzurri triumph at the European Championships: Jacobs ORO, also Fabbri and Simonelli. A historic day

It was a memorable day for Italian athletes at the European Athletics Championships in Rome, at the Olympic Stadium. Italy shone, winning three golds. Marcell Jacobs won the 100 meters with 10″02, followed by Chituru Ali (10″05) and Britain’s Romell Glave (10″06).

With this double, Italy reaches nine medals in total: five gold, four silver and one bronze.

Leonardo Fabbri achieved gold in the shot put with a throw of 22.45 metres, overtaking the Croatian Mihaljevic and the Polish Haratyk. Enthusiastic, Fabbri said he wanted to compete against the Americans and that he wasn’t at his full capabilities yet.

Lorenzo Simonelli dominated the 110 meter hurdles with 13″05, setting the second best world time of the year and the new Italian record. The 22-year-old, born in Tanzania and raised in Rome, expressed particular satisfaction with his victory in his city.

Mattia Furlani, at just 20 years old, won silver in the long jump with 8.38 metres, a new under-20 world record. He showed great sportsmanship towards the Olympic champion Miltiadis Tentoglou, applauding and waiting for the result with him.

Francesco Fortunato won bronze in the race walk, with a season-best performance of 1:19:54. Happy with his result, he underlined the importance of the Roman public and declared that he wanted to continue competing at the highest levels.

After the many successes, the day will remain historic for Italian athletics.
