Focs de Sant Joan, fire jumping and lateen sailing regatta

A new edition of the Focs de Sant Joan is underway, organized by the ProLoco Riviera del Corallo with the contribution and support of the Municipality of Alghero and the Alghero Foundation. Since time immemorial, on the day when the sun seems to stand still, the people of Alghero have become companions of San Giovanni. In the light of the fires, clasped by the hands, they place the seal of a friendship destined to last forever.

Last year the three days of events were extraordinary in terms of themes, technical and cultural contents, this year an equally rich program of events will be proposed, under the artistic direction of Marco Velli, structured by veterans and new associations who will enrich the event with curious and engaging activities.

The Focs de Sant Joan are a rich and important initiative that sees in the symbolism used part of the mystery that surrounds the bond between people that the fire seals – explains Ennio Asuni, president of the ProLoco Riviera del Corallo – The event represents an expression of identity for Alghero in its being Catalan, in its rediscovery year after year that inseparable bond made of language, people and traditions”.

The three days of events will kick off on Friday 21 June with the Sardinian crafts fair and the Music Festival. Big news from Focs 2024 will be Saturday 22 June the Palio dei Focs of Sant Joan organized by the Naval League, the ASD Il Marinaio and the Petraia Neighborhood Committee. A lateen sailing regatta will pit 12 boats in competition, each paired with the city’s neighborhoods or hamlets.

Sunday 23, after the religious rites, it will begin with the parade of hundreds of people dressed in white ready to promise each other eternal friendship. The meeting will be in Torre Garibaldi at 6.30pm.

The entire evening will be presented by Nicola Nieddu and Carla Valentino.

Parallel to Santa Maria La Palma in the courtyard of the former middle school in via Arzachena, Ombra Cultural organizes the concert of songs in Alghero by Agostino Salis under the musical direction of maestro Francesco Scognamillo and the collaboration of Massimiliano Peana and Matteo Scala.
