European and municipal elections, Liguria voting today and tomorrow: rules, lists, candidates

The European elections are underway. From 3pm to 11pm on Saturday 8th and from 7am to 11pm on Sunday 9th June we will vote to renew the European Parliament. The European elections are combined with the renewal of the administrations of 125 Ligurian municipalities, of which 39 in the province of Genoa. The most important, above 15 thousand inhabitants and therefore with a possible run-off (23 and 24 June) if no candidate exceeds 50% plus one vote, are Albenga, Rapallo and Sanremo.

TIMES – On Saturday 8th the polling stations are open from 3pm to 11pm, on Sunday 9th June from 7am to 11pm. After the polls close the counting will begin, first with the counting of the list votes and then the preferences obtained by the various candidates. For the European elections there is a threshold of 4%: to participate in the allocation of seats, the individual lists must exceed it throughout the national territory, divided into five constituencies: North-West, North-East, Centre, South and Islands. Liguria is part of the North West, which also includes Valle d’Aosta, Lombardy and Piedmont. There are 20 seats to be distributed.

VOTERS – All adult Italian citizens registered on the electoral lists and EU citizens resident in Genoa who have requested to vote for Italian candidates for the European Parliament can vote. To vote you must show up at the polling station with your voter card and an identification document. If there are no spaces in the electoral card, or in the event of loss or theft, the voter can obtain a new card at the Electoral Office in Corso Torino 11.

HOW TO VOTE – To vote you can place an You can express from one to a maximum of three preferences (if there is more than one, at least one must go to a different gender than the others indicated), writing the name and surname, or the surname alone, on the lines next to the symbol . Otherwise only the first preference will be considered valid. Furthermore, separate voting is not possible: the male and female candidates for whom a preference is expressed must be part of the same voted list.

NUMBERS – In Genoa there are 478,991 voters registered on the electoral lists. There are 7,040 fewer than in the 2019 European elections, when there were 486,031. Among those eligible, 225,655 are men, 253,336 women. The total also includes voters registered in the Registry of Italians Resident Abroad, who instead increase: 30,437 those who live in countries outside the European Union (in 2019 there were 23,474) and will vote in Genoa, while 10,782 will vote abroad. There are 150 Genoese students away from home who will vote in another municipality. There are 8,508 new voters, divided between men (4,377) and women (4,131).
