he had inhaled gas from the camping stove

Milan – Four deaths in three days, to the San Vittore prison. The latest case, yesterday evening around 7pm, however, would not have been a suicide. A prisoner originally from Morocco who was not even 23 years old inhaled gas from the camp stove, but it would have been an “attempt to obtaining hallucinogenic effects gone badly”. This was stated by Gennarino De Fazio, general secretary of the Uilpa Penitentiary Police, that has clarified the contours of the prisoner’s death, after the suicide alarm launched this morning by Aldo Di Giacomo of the acronym Spp.

The boy was found lifeless in his cell last night around 7pm. A death, which for De Fazio “heavily reflects the issue of drug-addicted prisonerswhich should follow alternative and effective recovery paths, also finding the necessary care and which, in the current situation of prisons, are very close to a chimera”. For the Uilpa leader, therefore, the Government should take note of the “unprecedented emergency” and pass a decree-law “to allow the deflation of prison densitythere are over 14 thousand more prisoners than the useful capacity”, while providing for “extraordinary and accelerated hiring in the Penitentiary Police Force, which is at least 18 thousand short”.

The number of deaths in Italian penitentiaries is impressive: 93 since the beginning of the year, of which 39 were due to suicide. To these must be added four members of the Penitentiary Police Corps who took their own lives.
