Manduria: Death on Manduria Avetrana, who was the victim

The victim

Another dead on the roads around Manduria. The third in the last three weeks. His name was Cosimo Donzelli, who lost his life yesterday afternoon around 2.30pm on the secondary provincial road that connects the Messapian city with Avetrana. He was from Francavilla Fontana and was 69 years old. He was driving a Volkswagen sedan which, for reasons under investigation, went off the road on a straight road. The car, which overturned several times before stopping, ended up in a vineyard about twenty meters from the road. During the carambola, the man’s body was thrown from the passenger compartment, falling disastrously to the ground. Some motorists called the single emergency number, 112, which sent two 118 ambulances to the scene from the Avetrana and Sava stations. When they arrived, the medics found the sixty-nine year old already in a coma with deep head wounds and other traumas all over his body. The injured man was loaded into an ambulance and taken in code red to the Marianna Giannuzzi hospital in Manduria where he died shortly after despite attempts to resuscitate him. The injuries, especially to the head, were too serious and caused fatal internal injuries. Meanwhile, the carabinieri of the Manduria company intervened at the site of the accident and will reconstruct the dynamics of the accident and the fire brigade team of the Messapian detachment intervened because, in the absence of information, it was feared there were other injured people. thrown away and not visible to first responders. Luckily the search was fruitless. The car which was recovered by a tow truck was seized.

Apparently the victim, a retired former mechanic, had left Francavilla Fontana where he lived and was headed to Avetrana along the secondary provincial road, a narrow road with bumpy sections and many pitfalls, used by those heading to the east coast coming from municipalities in the Brindisi area. Seven tortuous kilometers that lead onto the primary provincial road, Manduria-Avetrana, equally bumpy and full of curves.

Yesterday’s accident was the third fatal accident in a few days on this same side of the Ionian province. Last May 20th another road tragedy caused two deaths who were driving a car and a bus respectively, fortunately without passengers. The scene of the head-on collision between the two vehicles was the Manduria-Maruggio road, another provincial road with several precedents where just yesterday the technicians of the Province of Taranto together with the local police personnel of the city of Primitivo wine, carried out an inspection to find a solution that can limit the high number of accidents on that stretch. A long and narrow straight road between two densely populated rural neighborhoods with numerous intersections with poor visibility. The solution of raised pedestrian crossings that can act as deterrents, the only one practicable due to the shape of the road, would have been discarded because it seems that raised stripes cannot be installed on provincial routes but only on municipal ones.
