U.23 European Championships: golden hat-trick for the Italian teams Italpress news agency

ANTALYA (TURKEY) (ITALPRESS) – Italy’s fencing is all golden on the third day of the Under 23 European Championships: in Antalya, at the debut of the team competitions, three Italian gold medals arrive in as many competitions at sunset on a Monday perfect that celebrates in the best way the anniversary – in the beginning it was 3 June 1909 – of the 115 years since the birth of the Italian Fencing Federation. A triumph marked by the two foil teams, men’s and women’s, and by the sabers’ formation. A golden hat-trick that gives Italy victory in the Nations Medal Table with a day to spare in the continental competition. The first triumph of the day goes to the women’s foil with the signatures of Anna Cristino, Aurora Grandis, Giulia Amore and Matilde Calvanese. The Italian team, followed closely by the maestros Maria Elena Proietti and Alessandro Puccini, members of the technical staff of head coach Stefano Cerioni, started the match with a large 45-22 victory over Romania. In the semi-final the Italians got the better of Germany with a score of 45-33, thus entering the final for the gold. In the title match, the Italians, assault after assault, widened the gap against Ukraine by winning the continental title thanks to the final 45-37. After less than an hour the second gold arrived thanks to the men’s foil. The quartet made up of Alessio Di Tommaso, Giulio Lombardi, Damiano Di Veroli and Giuseppe Franzoni entered the match in the quarter-finals with a match easily won against Sweden 45-16. The Azzurri, always followed at the bottom of the platform by the masters Alessandro Puccini and Maria Elena Proietti at the bottom of the platform, beat Germany in the semi-final 45-30. In the final the Italian foil players controlled France from the early stages of the match and took home the first step of the podium thanks to a score of 45-26. The blue trio was possible thanks to the men’s saber team. The team made up of Mattia Rea, Lorenzo Ottaviani, Lupo Veccia Scavalli and Marco Mastrullo entered the match in the quarter-finals against Georgia with the victory, after a balanced match 45-40. In the semi-final Italy, followed by the two coaches Fabio Di Lauro and Diego Occhiuzzi from the staff of coach Nicola Zanotti, got the better of Hungary with a score of 45-39 thanks to the victory in the last three periods after a complicated start. The match for the gold was always very balanced with the Azzurri beating Romania 45-42 thus making the Mameli anthem played for the third time in Antalya.
A triumphal day, in short, on the day of the 115th birthday of the FIS, under the eyes of the Federal President Paolo Azzi, in Turkey together with the Vice President Vincenzo De Bartolomeo. But for the expedition led by the Head of Delegation Alberto Ancarani, despite the arithmetic early success in the medal table (Italy has 12 medals of which 5 gold, one silver and six bronze, and no one can reach it with just three races to go) no it’s still time to stop or feel satisfied. Tomorrow, in fact, is the fourth and final day at the Under 23 European Championships in Antalya with the last three team competitions. From 8 am on the platform the women’s saber (Alessia Di Carlo, Benedetta Fusetti, Michela Landi, Manuela Spica), the men’s sword (Filippo Armaleo, Enrico Piatti, Fabrizio Di Marco and Simone Mencarelli) and the women’s sword (Sara Maria Kowalczyk, Carola Maccagno, Gaia Caforio and Lucrezia Paulis) with the aim of closing this exciting event in style.
