BORGARO – Bitten sideways during the electoral buffet, woman risks suffocation: saved by a teacher. There were moments of strong apprehension the other evening at Villa Tapparelli in Borgaro. During an electoral meeting in view of the next elections scheduled for June 8th and 9th, not everything went smoothly. After the discussion with a group of elderly people, a lady suddenly felt ill due to a piece of food that went askew.

Luckily, a teacher from the local nursery school was in the room and she didn’t waste any time. While the 112 call went out, the teacher intervened, helping the woman to breathe freely thanks to precise unblocking maneuvers, known as the Heimlich maneuver. A timely and probably decisive action in saving the life of the lady who was then entrusted to the care of the 118 team who arrived shortly afterwards at the facility in via Matteotti.

The Heimlich maneuver is a first aid technique used to treat airway obstruction caused by a foreign body, such as a piece of food. Created by the American doctor Henry Heimlich in 1974, it consists of a series of abdominal compressions applied under the diaphragm of the suffocating person. This movement creates pressure from inside that can expel the object stuck in the airway. The Heimlich maneuver can save lives and is an essential skill for anyone, especially in emergency situations at home or in public places.
