San Giorgio, the solemn celebrations concluded yesterday

It ended after midnight “ranni party” in honor of San Giorgio.

To amaze those present, a video mapping of considerable depth, which involved the baroque buildings as well as the view of the Cathedral, and then the pyromusical, magnificent as always. Finally, the icing on the cake, new this year, the fireworks, at the end of everything, held in the Iblean Garden.

Tens of thousands of faithful and fervent supporters of the holy martyr, coming from everywhere, who did not want to miss the key event of the celebrations. The ancient city of Ragusa yesterday, throughout the day, was literally invaded by a river of people. More than 60 thousand, according to the organizers’ estimates.

It was the bishop of the diocese of Ragusa, Msgr. Giuseppe La Placa, yesterday afternoon, presiding over the solemn mass concelebrated in the presence of the parish priest of the cathedral, Don Pietro Floridia, and other priests. Monsignor La Placa, during the function held in the presence of the highest civil and military authorities, made a point of recalling the peculiarities of the holy knight and how his figure is still very relevant today.

“We must commit ourselves to building – explained Mgr. La Placa – a better world. We need the courage to fight to promote the dignity of the new. Through Saint George, the Lord tells us that there is hope for everyone. Let us rely on the intercession of the megalomartyr so that our life can be a testimony of faith in Christ.”

Among the most evocative moments, the stop at the church of the Holy Souls of Purgatory, in Piazza Repubblica, characterized by the recitation of Vespers.

Along the entire route of the procession, numerous faithful who, from the balconies of their homes, especially in Corso XXV Aprile but also elsewhere, paid homage to the holy martyr, as tradition dictates, with the throwing rose petals. Then the final act, after midnight, with the fireworks at the Iblean Garden.

“The tens of thousands of attendees that it was possible to record during this week, and especially on Friday, Saturday and yesterday – say the members of the celebration committee – demonstrate how the celebratory tradition dedicated to the holy knight continues to attract great interest from faithful and visitors. We must thank all those who supported us, public and private bodies, political representatives, sponsors and law enforcement. Without forgetting all the citizens who, with their donations, contributed to the success of the festival. Among the thanks also those to those who took care of the splendid artistic lighting for the streets of Ibla and Piazza Duomo and, naturally, to those who took care of the fireworks and musical fireworks. Thanks also to the San Giorgio Città di Ragusa and Vito Cutello di Chiaramonte Gulfi bands and to the Promo Service company”.

The local lottery draw will be held on Sunday 9 June at 7.30 pm in the sacristy of the Cathedral.
