The Sienese municipal administration will be co-organizer of the olive growing valorization project as part of the meeting of the consultative committee of the International Olive Committee (COI) to be held in Siena from 27 to 30 May 2024, entitled “General States of oil”. This was decided by the municipal council which met this morning, Thursday 16 May. The world’s leading experts on the topic of olive growing will be in the city for a round table on the national and international COI market: the event will take place in the Sala Italo Calvino of the Santa Maria della Scala and will be divided into three days dedicated to the world of agriculture.

Given the importance of the meeting, which will attract guests and associations at an international level, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry (Masaf) has asked the Institute of Services for the Agricultural Food Market (Ismea) to collaborate directly on the realization of the event and to carry out the coordination function to acquire the availability and contributions of the subjects involved (Tuscany Region, the interested Municipalities and the producer associations). The collaboration will also be aimed at an analysis of the PDO and PGI olive sector which highlights the main production and economic dynamics of the sector at a national and global level, the contents of which will be shared with the participants of the event.

With the aim of enhancing the olive sector and activating the local supply chain from production to sale, also with the involvement of the tourism sector, the Municipality of Siena deemed it necessary to outline the methods of co-organisation and functioning of the event, through the signing of a specific memorandum of understanding with Ismea. Together with a contribution of 15 thousand euros, the municipal administration will grant Ismea free use of the rooms of the Santa Maria della Scala complex, in agreement with the Foundation. Furthermore, collateral events will be organized at the COI convention, using this important showcase for the valorisation of the local production system and for the tourist promotion not only of the entire local agri-food sector, but also of the historic center of Siena.
