The Friuli Venezia Giulia it is certainly not the land of the mafia. But we must be very careful in continuing to affirm that the regional territory is a happy island with respect to that problem. Of course, if we compare it to other lands in the Bel Paese there is no comparison, but Even here the mafia is trying to set up shop. This is demonstrated by the numbers of seizures of houses, businesses and land which in recent years have been confiscated or are still under seizure. But that is not all. In addition to drug dealing and prostitution which are partly managed, albeit from afar, by some clans as investigations by the Dia have clearly highlighted, the phenomenon of human trafficking has also emerged forcefully for some time migrants with the explosion of the Balkan route. Some of the terminals refer precisely to mafia families with a structure that is organized into cells that operate in multiple regions, including Friuli Venezia Giulia. The individual cells, while maintaining strong autonomy in their respective territorial areas, are closely connected to the parent company. Finally, but certainly of great importance, another fundamental traffic that has always interested the mafias is that of waste, to which this last piece of investigation also refers which originates in 2019 from Frosinone and today also affects Western Friuli.

WHERE THEY ARE LOCATED

The investigative activities conducted over time have highlighted – according to what can be read, among other things from the latest report of the president of the Court of Appeal and from the six-monthly report of the Dia which is based in Trieste the presence of projections of the “traditional mafias”attributable above all to the ndrangheta, which they aim to infiltrate the legal economic circuit through subjects organic to or close to the ndrine. Which is to say that there is not yet a concrete rooting of mafia families in the regional territory, but every contract, particularly in the sector of large public works, is an opportunity to try to put a foot inside permanently. Attempts have been present for years in the construction, mining and third-party transport sectors. Furthermore, money laundering also makes history in a substantial way.

COSA NOSTRA

It should also be noted that some investigative evidence has also documented activism in the Friulian context subjects connected to “cosa nostra”, involved in important mafia investigations and with economic interests in the real estate sector. There were some examples in the Aviano area and in the Udine area. So that we don’t miss anything the investigations also highlighted the attempts of Camorra to seek safe havens in Friuli Venezia Giulia. Belonging subjects to the Campania criminal organization and, more specifically to the Camorrahave been found, always over time, in particular, in the territory of the Friulian coast with close connections up to the town of Caorle shocked years ago by an important investigation. Furthermore, there are mafia economic interests in the catering and clothing retail sectors.

ARMS TRAFFICKING

The proximity to the border has already triggered a series of more systematic and detailed checks to try to understand if there even exists a arms trafficking linked to clans and mafia families. From what we read in the Dia report, it must immediately be said that some connections have been identified, but not such as to cause particular alarm on this front which is decidedly delicate. However, you always have to keep your eyes open, which This also applies to scams, both on the road (mirror, fake accidents, fake lawyers, etc.) than those more complex of a fiscal nature. On this particular front, in fact, some of those arrested were identified as affiliated with or very close to organized crime in Campania. A past, then, but we are talking about a few years ago, the permanent presence of Apulian criminal associations located mainly in the province of Udine was also ascertained in the area. Finally, to make sure we don’t miss anything, the spotlight has turned on eco-mafias, with waste trafficking of all kinds which have also “occupied” Friuli Venezia Giulia. Waste trafficking has at least three or four trajectories. They range from the province of Pordenone (yesterday’s investigation highlighted Aviano), but warehouses with the same purpose have also been identified in the province of Udine (Remanzacco and Gorizia. All with a strong smell of organized crime.
