ROME (ITALPRESS) – “A letter that was published urged me not to lock myself away in what was defined as the ivory tower of the rectorate, and a sign also asked me what I think of what is happening in Gaza. I don’t want to leave this question unanswered. What I think about what is happening in Gaza I have said publicly and not in fortuitous or informal circumstances, but on fully significant occasions such as the speech I made eight days ago at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, or with the letter sent to the President of the Republic of Israel, also reiterating the request for an immediate ceasefire”. Thus the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, in his speech on the occasion of the 11th edition of Graduate Day, at La Sapienza University.
“The need to respect humanitarian law is in our Constitution. It applies in all directions – the head of state recalled -: for the Palestinian people, it applies to the children killed while listening to music at a rave last October 7, it applies to the children slaughtered that day, it applies to Mahsa Amini and to the girls who after her were imprisoned because they wore the headscarf incorrectly, this applies to young people who cannot study in Afghanistan”.
“For our Republic, all violations of human rights must be denounced and opposed – continued Mattarella -. All, everywhere, always. Because human dignity, the demand for freedom, the condemnation of oppression, the rejection of brutal violence do not change value depending on the territories, depending on the borders between states, depending on the international relations between political parties or movements. This awareness is strongly felt in universities because it constitutes their heritage, because for a millennium universities have been the seat of free debate, of freedom of criticism, sometimes even of dissent from power. Always connected across state borders. Freedom, peace, human rights pass through dialogue, through comparison, the free circulation of their value. Against violence and hatred which, by spreading, lead to horrifying results as happened yesterday in Slovakia”.
