(ANSA) – ROME, MAY 16 – Ukrainians today celebrate Vyshyvanka day, the international day of the embroidered national shirt, a traditional Slavic dress that contains elements of local ethnic embroidery. The initiative was born in 2006 from an idea of a group of students in Chernivtsi and since then it has taken place every third Thursday of May, in more than 100 countries.

The holiday has now become part of the cultural and spiritual heritage of the Ukrainian people. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s wife, Olena, wrote in X that “the embroidered shirt has become an informal Ukrainian uniform for all who defend humanity and freedom.
