The flooding of the Lambro, which occurred yesterday Wednesday 15 May, severely affected the CeAS – Ambrosian Solidarity Centre, which is based in the Lambro park in Milan. The structure is now submerged in over a meter of water and the 70 people hosted there have had to abandon their host communities. The situation – explain operators – is “very serious and does not currently allow us to precisely quantify the damage, but from an initial reconnaissance that was possible, we must note damages amounting to several tens of thousands of euros”. What were lost were household appliances and furnishings of the residential communities, clothes of the guests, office equipment and systems. The people hosted by CeAS have all been evacuated and are temporarily welcomed by a parish in the neighbourhood, but they will not be able to return to their communities for a few weeks. The Ambrosian Solidarity Center is already looking for alternative solutions in view of the restoration work on the structures. Already in 2014 the Ambrosian Solidarity Center had suffered damage from a serious flood and now once again finds itself having to start again: “We appeal to the solidarity of all Milanese people, so that our families, children, young people and women guests can return to their communities, which are their home, as soon as possible”, we read in a note. The centre, founded by card. Carlo Maria Martini in 1986 and led for years by Don Virginio Colmegna, is a solidarity village that offers hospitality and help to 70 people with various fragilities.
