Orange weather alert for intense rain and thunderstorms: fords and Tul road closed

Palmanova – The Civil Protection of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region has issued an orange critical weather alert valid from 00:00 on 16/05/2024 to 12:00 on 17/05/2024 for widespread intense rain, locally very intense rain, locally strong thunderstorms.

The occurrence of these events is leading to some crisis situations in the minor hydrographic and urban drainage network and the raising of water courses.

SOR received reports relating to flooding in the underpass of Regional Road 354 in the municipality of Latisana (Crosere locality).

The fords of Rauscedo in the municipality of Vivaro and Murlis in the municipality of Zoppola remain closed, as well as the secondary fords in the municipality of Cordenons. Following the issuing of the alert, the Tul road in the municipality of Clauzetto will remain closed at least for the entire duration of the alert.

Situation lakes and rivers

The warning thresholds are regularly exceeded for some secondary hydrometers, not linked to the flood service, in the Tagliamento mountain basin, the flows are decreasing.

As regards the Livenza basin, the level of the second garrison has been exceeded for the Cellina Vajont hydrometer, located downstream of the Ravedis reservoir, the flow rates are close to the flood peak.

At the moment the level of the Ca Selva reservoir appears to be slightly higher than the warning level, with a decreasing trend. The other reservoirs have sub-threshold levels.

Weather situation

An Atlantic depression is causing an influx of humid air at altitude from the south-west, while in the lowlands there is a convergence between the north-east which blows on the Friulian plain and the Sirocco which affects the entire Adriatic. During the night and the first part of the morning the convergence remained on the Adriatic, opposite the coasts of Friuli Venezia Giulia and eastern Veneto, triggering showers and thunderstorms moving towards the north-east.

From around 9am the storm gradually moved northwards due to the strengthening of the Sirocco. The rainfall was light to moderate on the coast, abundant to intense on the eastern side, intense in the west.

Forecasts

Thursday 16 May: stationary rain, including thunderstorms, intense or very intense, possible during the night and in the morning, especially on the Pordenone and Udine plains and the Carnic Prealps.

In the next few hours the rain will tend to ease. From mid-afternoon, new intensification of rain, with locally strong showers and thunderstorms, associated with the passage of a front. The rains are expected to gradually stop after midnight.

Friday 17 May: cloudy sky in the mountainous area, variable in the plains, slightly cloudy on the coast. Scattered showers and thunderstorms during the day, more likely between the Pre-Alps and the plain in the afternoon. Rainfall will generally be moderate or locally heavy.

Saturday 18 May: sky generally not very cloudy with more substantial cloud cover towards the mountain area. During the day, scattered and intermittent showers, including thunderstorms, are more likely in the afternoon towards the mountain area. Breezy winds will blow.
