Gaza: five Israeli soldiers killed by “friendly fire” in the north of the Strip

Five soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) were killed and seven others were injured, three of them seriously, in a “friendly fire” incident in the Jabaliya camp, in the north of Gaza Strip. The IDF themselves announced it in a note.

This brings the toll of IDF soldiers killed since the start of the ground operation against the Palestinian Islamist movement to 278 Hamas in Gaza and border areas in October 2023. The five victims, all serving in the 202nd battalion of the Parachute Brigade, are: Captain Roy Beit Yaakov, 22 years old; Sergeant Major Gilad Arye Boim, 22; Sergeant Daniel Chemu, 20; Sergeant Ilan Cohen, 20; Sergeant Major Betzalel David Shashuah, 21 years old.

According to what was found in an initial investigation by the IDF, yesterday a group of soldiers had established a position in a building in Jabaliya. Several hours later, IDF tanks spotted a gun barrel in one of the windows of the same building and, thinking they were enemy forces, launched an attack. The incident remains under further investigation
