“The cases of physical or verbal violence reported in the region in 2023 were 588, with an increase of more than 20% compared to the 481 cases in 2022. We do not believe that this is a random escalation: the growth of waiting lists, the lack of general practitioners and local services, the same staff shortages evidently contribute to increasing tension among users and stress levels among staff. It is a phenomenon that should not be underestimated: the positive awareness campaigns against violence also implemented at a regional level they must necessarily be supported, to be effective, also by concrete and targeted actions aimed at resolving the critical issues and issues that are objectively reducing, year after year, the quality and response capacity of our public health”. These are the words of Orietta Olivo, regional secretary of the CGIL public service in light of the data provided by Arcs.
The situation
“The decline in medical and nursing staff is the tangible sign of a chronic lack of planning, at national and regional level, and of the lack of a real will to invest in strengthening the workforce – continues Olivo -. If it is true that the reduction concerns exclusively atypical contracts, there is no reversal of trend among employees and, in particular, the exodus of doctors and nurses continues, which is not only linked to retirements, but also to resignations structural to overtime and recalls to service, the progressive increase in the average age of the staff, the low level of wages are factors that we have been denouncing for years, without the councilor deciding to open a real discussion with the unions to seek concrete solutions and shared”. The secretary then concluded by saying that “The demographic dynamics and the reduced contribution of university courses are only a partial alibi”.
