Thursday 16 May 2024 – 10.15am

For the first time on the Island of Elba one was conducted screening to counteract juvenile sudden cardiac death.

As stated in a note from the Sant’Anna University School of Advanced Studies in Pisa. In total, 170 among male and female students of the “Cerboni” Technical Institute for Commercial and Surveyors and of the “Foresi” Higher Education Institute of Portoferraio were involved in a prevention program, thanks to the “JUST-Coast” project, an extension of the “JUST” project ” (acronym for “JUvenile Sudden deaTh: JUST know and treat”), coordinated by the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna of Pisa in collaboration with Monasterio.

The screening was supported by the “THE” (“Tuscany Health Ecosystem”) project, financed with PNRR funds and which sees the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa as coordinator of that part dedicated to population health, and was promoted by Alberto Giannoni and Michele Emdin, teachers of the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, and Emilio Pasanisi, director of Cardiology at the Livorno Hospital.

The tests were performed by Alberto Giannoni, together with Dr. Francesca Bonanni. Nursing support was provided by Angela Durante and Francesca Moschetti, both from the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna.

They were introduced to the 170 students involved in “JUST-Coast”. questionnaires on family history of sudden death or on pathologies that can predispose to sudden death and have been carried out electrocardiograms in digital format. A portion of the students were then subjected to cardiological visit at the Portoferraio hospital, thanks to the support of Riccardo Cecchetti, head of internal medicine.

“The ‘JUST-Coast’ project marks a milestone – underlines Alberto Giannoni, speaking on behalf of the entire research group – in the fight against sudden cardiac death of young people on the Island of Elba, to raise awareness and to prepare the community on the importance of prevention. The screenings represented a first step towards creating a culture of preventive health among young people, particularly important in the internal areas of the Tuscany region. For the success of this screening campaign, the support of the school directors of the two Portoferraio institutes involved, Lorella Di Biagio of ‘Cerboni’, and Alessandra Rando of ‘Foresi’, was fundamental. Our thanks go to them.”
