50 year old worker dies

A serious accident at work has hit Tuscany. Nicola Corti, a 50-year-old worker, lost his life in the rolling mill department of the Kme factory in Fornaci di Barga. The accident occurred around 7pm, when Corti was crushed under one of the large copper coils in the floating department. The impact caused severe crushing of the chest, which was fatal.

A colleague immediately raised the alarm. The 118 staff arrived on site with two ambulances from the Misericordia di Barga, but unfortunately it was not possible to do anything other than confirm the worker’s death. The police and ASL workplace safety personnel intervened to investigate the dynamics of the accident.

The death of Nicola Corti, a worker from Barga, sparked an immediate reaction from the unions. The national coordinators of the Kme group of Fim Fiom Uilm, Michele Folloni, Massimo Braccini and Giacomo Saisi, issued a statement announcing a 24-hour strike starting from yesterday’s 10pm shift.

“At Kme in Fornaci di Barga, a leading company in Europe in the production of copper, a 50-year-old worker tragically lost his life by getting stuck in a machine – we read in the note. – A very serious fact, a new tragedy at work resulting from the lack of safety. In the Fornaci di Barga plant, the RSU proclaimed a 24-hour strike and the plant was immediately stopped, while 2 hours of strike are proclaimed in all the national plants of the Kme group for today. Our country – add the unions – is paying an unbearable price in blood. We await the investigation of this tragedy and we sympathize with the family’s pain, making ourselves available for any support or action that may be necessary.”
