It happened today: On May 16, 1929, during a dinner at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, the first Academy Awards, later known colloquially as the Oscars, were presented. Tickets to the event, hosted by Douglas Fairbanks, cost five dollars and 270 people attended. Emil Jannings and Janet Gaynor won best actor and actress respectively. The statuette for best film went to Ali, with Charles Rogers and Clara Bow (and a young Gary Cooper). He will remain the only silent film to have obtained the highest recognition. The story tells of two young American pilots during the Great War, who compete for the love of a woman. Evidently the romantic-aeronautical genre has always had appeal on the big screen. It was released in US theaters on May 16, 1986 Top guns, directed by Tony Scott. Despite the less than enthusiastic reviews, the film turned out to be a box office triumph. And the character of Lieutenant Maverick will make Tom Cruise a star.
