A long day of celebrations in Calatafimi Segesta to commemorate the 164th anniversary of Garibaldi’s Battle of the Thousand in Pianto Romano on 15 May 1860. It began with the laying of the laurel wreath on the fallen in Piazza Plebiscito and then with the solemn ceremony with the maxims civil, military and religious authorities in Pianto Romano.

Present were the Prefect of Trapani Daniela Lupo and the Police Commissioner Giuseppe Felice Peritore recently installed in the province of Trapani and the bishop Fragnelli.

Garibaldi’s famous phrase in Bixio was remembered: “Here we make Italy or we die” which gave rise to Italy One but also the importance of the values ​​of the Common Heritage which are solidarity, legality and the feeling of freedom .

The Pianto Romano Shrine is a symbol of the Risorgimento which preserves the fallen Bourbons and Garibaldi in a single embrace of reconciliation.

Great emotion and satisfaction from the mayor of Calatafimi Segesta Francesco Gruppuso and the municipal administration in thanking all those present but in particular also the Armed Forces (Army, Air Force and Port Authority) as well as the Carabinieri, Forestry Corps and Italian Red Cross present with the own stands in the city to represent state institutions serving the civil community.

A historical re-enactment of the first moments after the battle was also performed by the children of the F Vivona institute in Calatafimi Segesta written by prof. Path cutter.

In the afternoon the conference in the municipal library was attended by the great-grandsons Giuseppe Garibaldi and Guido Palamenghi Crispi, prof. Manlio Corselli, the pro. Gucciardo and the Proloco president N. Placenza moderated by professor Cristina Graziano, concluded the day by dusting off wonderful pages of history closed with the Mameli anthem of the Segesta musical band.
