A community in shock: unknown persons stole, on the night between Sunday 12th and Monday 13th May, the gold jewels that adorn the processional ark of Santa Monica. The event occurred just a few hours after the procession of the saint, who is traditionally adorned with jewels donated over the years by the people of Casarze.
The Carabinieri are investigating the theft: to date it has not been possible to trace those responsible nor the stolen goods. I dismay the parish priest, Don Maurizio Prandi:
“Every ring, chain, bracelet is a story, often the story of a pain or wound that often turns into joy – explains the parish priest Don Maurizio Prandi -. I would like to say that with this gesture they did not simply steal the gold, but they wounded an entire community to the heart.”
An anguish also shared by the mayor, Giovanni Stagnaro:
“I fully agree with Don Maurizio Prandi’s words.
As the representative, pro tempore, of Casarza Ligure I believe that this serious gesture cannot simply be passed off as a crime, theft to be prosecuted.
It strikes the heart of our community.”
