Giro, Valentin Paret-Peintre wins the tenth stage solo

The success in the tenth stage of the Giro d’Italia held on Tuesday, after the rest day, was achieved by the Frenchman Valentin Paret-Peintre, covering 142 km between Pompeii and Cusano Mutri, with an uphill finish. The 28-year-old Decathlon man placed his paw on the finishing ramps, about 3km from the finish line.

The Frenchman preceded his compatriot Romani Berdet, 33 year old from Team Dsm, by 30″ and by about 1 minute the Slovenian Jan Tratnik, 34 year old from Visma, who had previously been the protagonist of a long solitary escape, but was then caught again 2 km from the national banner. arrival All three riders who reached the podium had been part of an even earlier and larger breakaway, allowed to escape with the blessing of the leaders of all the teams.

In the general classification, the Slovenian Tadej Pogacar, captain of the UAE, still leads the way, ending his daily effort with a delay of 3’15”: his advantage is still 2’40” over the Colombian Martinez and 2’58” on the Welshman Thomas.

“I really can’t describe my feelings, but I’m very happy,” said the winner, very emotional, immediately after crossing the finish line. «As a kid I saw Romain Bardet on TV getting on the podium of the Tour de France, and today I was here fighting against him, and even beating him! My first success really couldn’t have been more beautiful.”

Avalanche risk, no Stelvio

What has been feared for a few days now has become official: the Stelvio Pass has disappeared from the program of the 2024 Giro, a legendary passage in the history of the Corsa rosa which this year would also have been the Cima Coppi, i.e. the highest altitude reached from the race, with its 2’750 msm. The caravan was scheduled to pass through there on Tuesday 21 May, as part of the 16th stage between Livigno and Santa Cristina Val Gardena. The reason for the cancellation lies in the danger of avalanches reported in that area following the recent heavy snowfalls. Instead of the Stelvio, the race will pass through the Giogo di Santa Maria, the new summit of the Giro, at an altitude of 2,486 metres: the stage, initially planned to be 202 km long, will measure finally 206 km.

On Wednesday, for the 11th pink stage, the convoy will move from Foiano di Val Fortore to Francavilla al mare, 207 km along a flat route and therefore suitable for sprinters, who could create a sprint finish.
