CROTONE «It is no longer possible to postpone the reclamation of the former industrial area of Crotone by Eni and it is not possible to give discounts to anyone! Crotone and the people of Crotone have too often been humiliated by postponements, reverses and attempts to reduce the scope of the reclamation operations. For this reason, as a Council Group of the Democratic Party we have filed a motion to commit the regional council to oppose in any way Eni’s request not to dispose of waste outside the region». The regional councilor of the Democratic Party Ernesto Alecci writes it. «Fearing – he continues – that the time for the discussion of the motion presented may take too long, I believe it is necessary to convene an extraordinary regional council dedicated precisely to dealing with the issue. The reclamation of this area and the disposal of waste outside the region are priority issues that the Calabria Region must take action to resolve as soon as possible and once and for all, without any kind of ambiguity. The request to convene an ad hoc Council arises precisely from the purpose of further strengthening the motion filed and promoting its voting in a very short time in order to establish the line of the Calabria Region and the essential and definitive points of the reclamation intervention by Eni”.

«A real environmental bomb»

«The time has come for everyone to clearly state, in front of the citizens of Crotone and the Calabrians, which side they are on! I hope that this request will be promptly accepted by the Prime Minister Mancuso, by President Occhiuto and by all the colleagues of the majority, since the City of Crotone has already paid too high a price due to broken promises and failures of responsibility. The “ex Pertusola” area of Crotone is, in fact, a long-standing story, which on many occasions in recent months I have wanted to bring to the attention of politicians and the press. A coastal area where the ruins of the former industrial area are still evident and where enormous quantities of industrial and radioactive waste are piled up. A real environmental bomb that has marked the lives of the people of Crotone in recent decades: although a reliable tumor registry cannot be found, it would be evident, in fact, the greater exposure of the inhabitants of the area to oncological pathologies and the greater number of sick people and deaths from these causes compared to the rest of the population. Some administrators of Crotone in the past had had the bizarre idea of calling this coastal area “the lovers’ walk”, although aware of the deep-seated dangers. Today this name appears even more like a joke, people continue to die and there is a real risk of a definitive spill of waste into the sea which would extend the threat to the whole of Calabria and the surrounding regions. As long as this territory is still “hostage” to this situation, talking about relaunch, economic growth and tourism development is difficult and illusory.”
