It was the day of entrepreneurs and their defense against the accusations contested by the Prosecutor’s Office Genoa in the investigation for corruption which involved the governor Giovanni Totihis chief of staff Matteo Cozzani and the entrepreneur Aldo Spinelli.
Today, in fact, it was Paola Faggioni who appeared before the investigating judge Aldo Spinelli, his son Roberto and Francesco Moncada, former director of Esselunga, recipient of a disqualification measure. According to the prosecution’s hypothesis, he would be responsible for illicit financing for a “hidden” payment for some advertising passages on a panel displayed on the Terrazza Colombo for the municipal elections of June two years ago in exchange for the unblocking of procedures to open Esselunga sales points in Sestri Ponente and Savona. Aldo Spinelli, for about an hour, responded to the judge «:» I said everything, everything.. «he stated at the end of the interrogation, adding that he was not worried and that he believed «that I deserved my freedom».
As his lawyer, Andrea Vernazza, later explained, “he let off steam”. An outburst about which nothing was officially said but, from what transpired, the entrepreneur in the framework he outlined would have defended himself by saying that he had always had the port’s interests at heart and that he had “acted only for those interests” that I’m also from the city. He then reiterated that the financing was “regular”.

His son Roberto, on the other hand, also with a disqualification measure, repeated what emerges from the wiretaps in the documents of the file: that is, that he did not agree with his father, he did not agree with his business management “of pouring money into politics” , in this case to the Toti Committee. In essence he would have called himself out by attributing the responsibilities to his father. “He did it all,” he would have said. Moncada, however, assisted by a group of lawyers led by Professor Paola Severino, made spontaneous statements and proclaimed his innocence. He then underlined that on the occasion of the meeting in the Region on 17 March 2022 “he always intended to act in full compliance with the law and in absolute transparency”, “in the light of day” and therefore denied having “adhered to any illicit agreement ».

Regarding the technical and bureaucratic aspects of the Sestri practice, Moncada was keen to point out that «it had a very long and complex process, started at municipal level way back in August 2010, passed through favorable sentences from the TAR and the Council of State, and finally which has recently reached the stage of the first services conference. On the other hand, the Savona practice did not require any regional passage.” Cozzani, accused among other things of having favored some Cosa Nostra gangs, denied the charges (he made spontaneous statements), although he did not respond to the investigating judge in La Spezia. Same line held on May 11th by Toti. There is a wait for his interrogation before the prosecutors which should be scheduled for tomorrow. Also today, public prosecutors Federico Manotti and Luca Monteverde heard from MP Ilaria Cavo and Beatrice Cozzi Parodi.
The latter received gifts, such as a Chanel bag, from Signorini but paid for, like the stays in Monte Carlo and the rest, by Aldo Spinelli. In the next few days, the other woman who accompanied him, Tamara Musso, will also be interviewed. Among the other witnesses who will also be called the mayor of Genoa, Marco Bucci. Finally, it should be highlighted that other potential threads emerge from the documents with respect to the disputes contained in the precautionary custody order, and in addition to the alleged affairs around the port and large-scale retail trade and to waste, interests in healthcare, in particular private healthcare, and Covid would also emerge: in the context of the vote exchange between the Riesino and Calabrian communities and Toti’s list, the investigators also discovered a huge fraud worth one million and 200 thousand euros on masks.
