MANTUA – A serious accident which occurred on the motorway this afternoon (it was around 5.30pm) between the Mantua Nord and Mantua Sud toll booths, forced the A22 staff to temporarily close the Mantua Nord entrance (reopened at 8.30pm) in southbound, to allow rescue operations. The tragic accident occurred at km 259 south. A van, with nine people of Indian origin on board, was apparently violently hit by an oncoming van, ending up overturning several times. Two people of Indian origins died, a 65-year-old and a 32-year-old. The driver of the 9-seater vehicle died instantly. Seven people were injured, two of them serious and transported by air ambulance to the hospitals of Parma (the injured person had a spinal trauma) and Brescia (Poli ambulance, in this case the injured person had an abdominal trauma), a third quite seriously was transported to Mantua with suspected abdominal trauma. All the others were slightly injured. Also on site were the Croce Verde, Porto Emergenza and Soccorso Azzurro emergency services and a medical vehicle. The Mantua firefighters also worked for two hours, as well as the police force, with patrols from Verona, Mantua and Trento carrying out the investigations. There are also obvious inconveniences for traffic: queues of up to 4 km reported between Nogarole Rocca and Mantua Sud.
