Rome is ready to welcome the 2024 European Athletics Championships with overwhelming enthusiasm. Leonardo Fabbri, the Italian shot put talent, is preparing with determination and ambition for an edition that promises spectacle and great emotions. With a recent Italian record behind him, Fabbri invites everyone not to miss the event, which represents one of the most important sporting occasions of the season.
Leonardo Fabbri towards the European Athletics Championships
Leonardo Fabbri, known for the world silver in the shot put in Budapest and the bronze at the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow, is thrilled to invite the Italian public to the upcoming European Athletics Championships Rome 2024. “Everyone come to the Olimpico, it will be crazy ,” he states passionately. The big event will be held from 7 to 12 June, with tickets already available on Vivaticket.
Recently, Fabbri set a new Italian record with a throw of 22.95 meters in Savona. This performance made him the second European weightlifter of all time, surpassed only by the German Ulf Timmermann, with a throw of 23.06 meters in 1988. This record allowed him to overtake Alessandro Andrei, Olympic champion and his idol, who held the previous record of 22.91 metres.
Fabbri’s long path to success
Leonardo Fabbri emotionally recounts how beating Andrei’s record was the fulfillment of the dream of a child who started throwing at the age of twelve. “Overcoming Andrei was fulfilling a child’s dream that he started throwing when he was 12,” he recalls. The event that marked a turning point in Fabbri’s career took place in Savona, where he managed to optimize his preparation and find the continuity necessary to compete at the highest international levels.
In recent months, Fabbri has achieved notable results, exceeding the 22 meter mark nine times in various competitions. Significant weight loss and the absence of physical problems have allowed the pitcher to train with greater regularity and technical stability, allowing him to maintain constant form even without being in top physical condition.
Expectations and hopes for Rome 2024
On 7 June, Leonardo Fabbri will face the qualifiers at the Stadio Olimpico, with the final scheduled for 8 June. Fabbri remembers his first experience at the Olimpico during the 2019 Golden Gala, where he threw only 19 metres, but considers that event as the beginning of his international career. Now, years later and with much more experience behind him, he is ready to demonstrate how much he has grown and improved.
Fabbri’s main objective at the European Championships in Rome is to win the gold medal, a goal never achieved by an Italian thrower in the previous 25 editions of the competition. Furthermore, the weightlifter has the ambition of getting closer to the European record, a goal that motivates him further: “The 11 centimeters that separate me from the European record are another goal.”
