Liguria, Landini: Toti resigns, follows Errani’s example

Genoa, 13 May. (askanews) – “When Vasco Errani was president of Emilia Romagna and he received a notice of investigation, a minute later he resigned, only to discover years later that he had nothing to do with it and that he was absolutely innocent. I think that is an important example because when someone plays a role there is not only the problem of what happens to him but there is also the problem of the credibility of the institutions he represents”. The secretary of the CGIL Maurizio Landini said this this morning in Genoa, responding to those who asked him whether the governor of Liguria Giovanni Toti should resign after ending up under house arrest on charges of corruption. “The risk I see – added Landini – is that, faced with what is happening, there will be an increase in the number of people who no longer feel represented by anyone and this is a weakening of democracy. I therefore believe that there are moments in which you have to also take responsibility for what you represent. If you think you are innocent you have every right to protect yourself but at the same time you cannot bring the institutions into the abyss. Then obviously everyone responds to their conscience.” “I consider what Errani did – concluded the secretary of the CGIL – a very important fact which restored credibility to him and to the institutions he represented. I think that today we are in an even worse situation because here, from what we read, it seems to me that it is not an isolated case that is emerging. The risk is that we are faced with a system that has established itself in recent years. I believe that a 360-degree light needs to be shed on it without looking at anyone and for this reason it is very important to defend autonomy and independence of the judiciary”.
