In previous editions of the Gala, the prestigious medal designed by Cy Twombly had been awarded, among others, to Luca Guadagnino, Roberto Benigni, Ennio Morricone and Matteo Garrone. Every year the event offers recognition to great personalities who contribute to deepening the artistic and cultural dialogue between Italy and the United States. And the director of “Lost in Translation”, “Marie Antoinette”, “Priscilla”, daughter of the great Fracis Ford Coppola, embodies the souls of the two countries. “It is very important for me to have friends who are artists, in different fields, and who encourage me. – stated the director – The American Academy in Rome is based precisely on the idea of ​​a community made up of artists who work with different languages, who are offered a space to create and gather. It’s a place I’ve always wanted to visit and hoped that one day I would be a part of it. And I’m very proud of my Italian roots, which make me feel so at home here.” During the Gala, 848,000 euros were raised, to support the interdisciplinary community of the Academy and the promotion of the exchange of innovative practices and ideas between American and Italian artists and scholars, in the context of the city of Rome.
