It’s an entire community in shock San Marco dei Cavoti. A slap in the face last night when the news began to spread that a son of this small community lost his life while he was in the midst of his working activity, and one might say also of his life considering his young age. The bewilderment upon waking up on a Sunday that has little of ‘holiday day’ in the month starting with the day dedicated to workers. John Carpinelli33 years old, mistakenly associated with Benevento origins at the time the news was launched, he was from San Marco, the town of Fortore, a land of conquest for wind turbines, but that’s another story, as well as the headquarters of the giant for which he worked .
A tragedy that happened way back Sicily while he was inside one of these ‘infernal’ structures, 112 meters high. A fall, the reasons are not yet known, and the end of the race 48 meters above the ground. The calculation is simple enough to understand how far he traveled before stopping and how his chances of survival were reduced to a minimum.
A unique pain, a family torn apart but, one might say, an entire community destroyed. Dramas that are terrible when they affect one in general, become almost intimate when one touches such a small centre, where everyone knows each other and where the elderly have seen practically entire generations grow up. And among these there was Giovanni, yet another victim of an absolutely avoidable tragic event, yet another person who wakes up in the morning to ‘earn your bread’ and he doesn’t return home.
This is becoming too high a price to pay. Sustenance minus a life to risk is not an adequate exchange. The exchange between ‘bread’ and ‘life’ is not comparable. And the paradox of these absurd tragedies at work that now fill the national news is that two opposite factors have come together: working for the future by embracing medieval risks.
