He pretended to be a water worker and, with the excuse of checking the taps, he robbed an elderly couple from Giussano, residing in via Tofane, of gold and jewels.
The usual excuse to check the water taps
Skilled scammers in action in Giussano: a fake water worker “emptied” an apartment by the lake with the excuse of checking the water taps. On Monday 29 April an elderly couple were tricked into their home: they handed over gold and family jewels. It all happened around 9.30 in the morning, when a young man showed up at the gate complete with an identification card, saying he was a water worker, in charge of carrying out checks on the pipes, as water leaks had occurred in the area. dangerous gases, so dangerous that even a neighbor had died.
The delivery of gold and jewels
The owner of the house, an 83-year-old elderly man, didn’t want to let him in, but the young man, after much talking, managed to convince him. And he also convinced his wife, who was initially out of the house with the dog. The couple witnessed the various checks that the fake employee carried out in the various rooms of the house. The young man in fact opened all the taps and pointed out to the owners that a strange smell was coming out of the water, a smell that he had probably spread himself to make what would soon be a real scam more credible. The employee then asked the couple to bring all the gold, jewelery and cash they had at home so as not to contaminate them. He emptied the fridge and put all the precious things inside. He then asked to open all the windows and close the meter. And it is at this moment that the theft took place.
The escape with the stolen goods
While the husband went down to the cellar to close the meter, the fraudster locked the lady in the bedroom, where she had gone to open the windows, and ran away with all the stolen goods, including the owner’s wallet. However, he ran into the elderly man who, seeing him running away, tried to stop him, but was pushed and made to fall to the ground. Moments of excitement that ended with the criminal’s escape. Waiting for him outside the house was most likely his accomplice in the car who allowed them to drive away quickly without leaving any traces.
Reporting to the Carabinieri and the newspaper
The Carabinieri were immediately alerted to report what happened.
There was a lot of bitterness and frustration among the owners in the face of the scam, but also a lot of disappointment at having lost all the gold and family jewels. Still in via Tofane, a similar episode occurred a few weeks ago, but fortunately the owner of the house gave up and didn’t let anyone in.
The report, which the elderly couple also wanted to make to our newspaper, serves to keep attention increasingly high and prevent others from ending up in the “clutches” of criminals.
