According to an investigation by AstraRicerche commissioned by Ancit, the National Association of Fish and Tuna Preserves, on a sample of Italians who practice physical activity regularly, 60% of those interviewed eat canned tuna one or more times a weeka percentage that rises to 66% among those who play three or more sports.

There are many reasons: practicality and convenience (58.6%), obviously, because it can be stored easily and for a long time (36%) and is ready to be consumed (34.5%).

And then because it is good (33.6%), accessible (18.5%) and anti-waste (13%), given that the packaging is recyclable. Indeed, over 42% of those interviewed have increased their consumption of tuna in cans or glass jars in the last two-three years.

Canned tuna: the ranking of the best according to Altroconsumo

Altroconsumo subjected to chemical laboratory tests 30 tuna samples in olive oil and extra virgin olive oil, both in cans and in glass, easily available in large-scale retail trade.

In particular, 19 brands of canned tuna and 11 of glass tuna were analysed.

Canned tuna or glass tuna?

Before going into the merits of the individual brands, according to the experts at Altroconsumo the canned tuna, present mainly in single portions of 50 grams (drained weight), ha lower prices compared to their glass counterparts, without this affecting the quality. There canned version of tuna it therefore proves to be a comfortable and convenient choice.

The tuna in glass It has more generous formats than the canned version but, for the same weight, the price is considerably higher.

The ranking of the best canned tuna to buy and eat

For what concern canned tuna, Rio Mare fished with a rod turns out to be the best of the test with 74 points. Excellent quality also for Angelo Parodi tuna steak (73 points), As Do Mar whole steak with (72 points), Callipo tuna in olive oil (71 points), Rio Mare Filodolio Tuna in olive oil, Carrefour Classic yellowfin tuna in olive oil and Consorcio Tuna in olive oil (all with 70 points).

Moving on to tuna in glass, Coop Fiofiore Yellofin tuna fillets ranked best in the test with 72 points. According to Altroconsumo, Callipo tuna fillets in olive oil is also of excellent quality (70 points) while Ondina tuna fillets in olive oil (Eurospin) is elected best purchase.
