Meeting with Mario Pede, the new interpreter of the Squinzanese new deal

We are approaching the first year of his administration, for some news given by the presence of many young people, for others the result of agreements with the former mayor Miccoli, tutelary deity of his team. In your opinion, what is the definition that best suits his team?

I believe it is more important to look at the substance than at the form or labels, I am not very passionate about definitions. Quoting William Shakespeare “What we call a rose, even by any other name, always retains its perfume”. And in essence I believe that our Administration is functioning so well because it is a combination of young and other expert forces, both animated by enthusiasm, desire to do things and love for the territory. Since the election campaign, our competitors have tried to downsize my figure or that of the entire project by claiming that my friend Mino Miccoli would have been a cumbersome presence. Now, as then, Mino represents a strong point for our group and his skills and his closeness represent a huge added value for us.

To conclude: I don’t know what the most appropriate definition for our team is, I only know that it is working great!

What are the most important things achieved in this first year of your administrative experience?

First of all, we created a summer and a winter billboard which made it possible to make our marina and our urban center more attractive and to bring an important flow of people during the summer months and those of November and December to Squinzano, periods in which families spend more. Valuing spending on culture and entertainment for a territorial marketing operation and to facilitate economic development is strategic.

Furthermore, by interacting with the realities of the territory, we have had a great relaunch of Squinzano sport also due to the reactivation of the municipal stadium which seemed an impossible undertaking until a year ago.

We have carried out important maintenance such as that on the Via Diaz canal and on the underpass drainage pumps which will help prevent flooding in those two important road accesses to our town.

We managed in record time to legitimize the Casalabate dock area and publish the management notice to be able to bring pleasure boating back into the marina, which represents an important sector for the economy and sociality.

Not only. We had a great deal of activity from the City Council and the various commissions with important regulations such as that on the Tari, cemetery services, the guarantor of animal rights, video surveillance, video footage of the City Council and many more.

Furthermore, this year we have faced and resolved housing and social emergency situations.

In recent weeks we have completed the installation of numerous video surveillance systems in sensitive points of our country and in the coming months there will be further interventions of the same type to increase coverage and security in the area.

We have redeveloped Piazza Sant’Anna which is one of the accesses to the historic center of our country, made a good part of Via Martin Luther King safe by positioning two raised pedestrian walkways, asphalted numerous streets and continued the renovation work on the Casalabate seafront.

In all of this, we managed to close the first operating budget with a large surplus of over 176,000.00 euros.

Tell us about the most important things you are about to do or will do

We will certainly be able to begin construction, already in the next few months, both on an important project to prevent flooding from rainwater in the area of Via Volturno and Piazza Vittoria (which will also alleviate the critical issues in the surrounding areas) and on the energy efficiency of the Town Hall.

We are working on the relaunch of the area of the former wine factories which could constitute an important development driver for the country and we are already working on a cultural project which aims to recover our historical heritage linked to wine production. Another important result that we would like to achieve in the coming months is the creation and regulation of the animal cemetery and to prepare the process to also create a new burial field for ground burials at our cemetery.

Soon we intend to bring the regulation for the disability guarantor and participation bodies to the City Council.

We will start the acquisition of the heritage (a good part of which has already been started during the City Council in April), within a few months, all the roadways present in Casalabate (about 60% are not owned by the Municipality but only for public use) in order to request connection to the water and sewerage network.

We plan to save the Collodi school from abandonment by making it a headquarters for associations and for our traffic police and the former covered market.

Next year we aim to relamp public lighting to LEDs and establish a public renewable energy community.

Next year we would also like to start massive works for the resurfacing of the road surface and continue the work of reviewing many municipal regulations that have been stagnant for decades.

What are the obstacles you struggle with every day

There are many problems and very few resources available. Furthermore, it is often sad to note that some of the criticism is not constructive but sectarian. Another problem is the undersized staff of our institution. In addition to this, we local administrators often struggle with bureaucracy that hinders and, at times, paralyzes many daily efforts.

A dream of his is the next four years of council

I would like to mention two, one for Squinzano and one for Casalabate: the valorisation of the Sanctuary of the Annunziata and the Nunziatella site, creating a religious tourist route linked to the Marian apparition and a large coastal defense project for our coast.

Small reflection on the sidelines: will it be true glory? posterity will judge
